10 Must-See Movies Expiring From Netflix in December 2018

While Netflix adds countless new movies to its streaming lineup every month, it also makes room by letting go of some old titles. While that doesn’t mean they’re gone for good (you never know when these movies will come back) you should watch them before they leave the streaming service in December.

Groundhog Day (December 1)

Bill Murray’s perpetually grumpy weatherman sees his sanity tested in mystical ways when he is forced to relive Groundhog Day—in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania no less—on an endless loop in this contemporary comedy classic.

Hellraiser (December 1)

Horror master Clive Barker made his directorial debut, adapting his own novella The Hellbound Heart into this dark and disgusting film that launched a horror movie franchise around its central villain, Pinhead, the leader of a demonic group known as Cenobites.

Stephen King’s Children of the Corn (December 1)

Based on Stephen King’s short story, Children of the Corn presents a Nebraska community of corn-harvesting kids who commit ritual murder to improve their crops—and who prove unnerving precisely because of their resemblance to fundamentalist religious lunatics.

The Game (December 1)

David Fincher’s follow-up to Seven may not have been the box-office hit of its predecessor, but it’s full of fun twists and turns. Michael Douglas plays Nicholas Van Orton, a wealthy banker (and an asshole) whose brother gives him an unusual gift: a mysterious game that will completely upend his life.

Battle Royale (December 10)

This brutally violent Japanese cult classic makes The Hunger Games seem quaint. By government decree, a group of teenagers are taken to a remote island on a field trip—where they’re left alone and instructed to fight to the death.

Teeth (December 10)

The terrors of adolescence make for great horror movies, and this horror-comedy hybrid is all sorts of unnerving. Dawn discovers something shocking about her body: She has teeth in her vagina. But what might seem like a nightmare may benefit Dawn as she navigates a nightmare world of abusive and predatory men.

Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (December 16)

Gary Oldman earned his first Oscar nomination for this stylish thriller, based on the classic John le Carré novel. After a mission goes wrong forces a British secret service agent into retirement, he picks apart the details of his former colleagues—one of whom he’s convinced is a Soviet spy.

Moana (December 20)

Disney heads to the Pacific with this computer-animated feature, with the titular character a Polynesian chief’s daughter who embarks on a mission to return a mystical relic in order to save her island—along with the help of a demigod voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

Spotlight (December 22)

This unglamorous portrayal of the Boston Globe‘s investigations into the Catholic church’s mishandling of decades’ worth of sexual abuse allegations shows the power of the press (and won the Oscar for Best Picture).

Troy (December 31)

Brad Pitt, Eric Bana, Orlando Bloom, and Diane Kruger lead the cast of beautiful actors who retell the story of Homer’s Iliad and the Trojan War—launched by the Spartan queen’s Helen’s affair with the Trojan warrior Paris.
