Shadwell homebred Karama (Kitten’s Joy) entered her Saturday debut with some hype and upbeat breezes over the Gulfstream main track, and came out of it with the ‘TDN Rising Star’ distinction. Pounded down to 9-5 despite a pedigree that seemed to lean particularly towards turf, she zipped right out to a clear advantage through opening splits of :22.42 and :45.07. The chestnut was still in command past the quarter pole, and was always doing plenty to fend off High Road (Quality Road) by 4 1/2 lengths in 1:23.19. Karama hails from an extremely deep female family that includes highest-level winners like Nashwan, Nayef, Ghanaati, Lahudood (GB) among countless other black-type performers. Her dam has a 2-year-old filly by The Factor who was sent to the U.A.E., and a yearling filly by more Than Ready. Safarjal (Ire) most recently visited Shadwell’s 2016 GI Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile hero Tamarkuz (Speightstown).
