Living a healthy lifestyle – Roodepoort Record

As we celebrate Healthy Lifestyle Awareness Day on 15 February, Dr Vernon Wessels of the ER24 Site Based Medical Service has issued some advice to the nation regarding healthy living.

“For the human body to sustain a long lifespan, we need to look after it. Although we will all suffer from illnesses and injuries, our body’s ability to recover well from these is directly related to how well the body has been maintained.”

Not everyone will want to participate in sporting events but it is important to get active. Craig Grix, a personal trainer, shared some hints about getting active. “Exercise also improves muscle tone and keeps your body flexible and your bone density in top condition.”

When you think of making a move into living a healthy lifestyle, take a step now and try it.

“We need to aim to prevent or at least limit our exposure to anything that has a negative impact on our bodies and provide them with the necessary environment to function well and recover from the unpreventable onslaught of life. Avoid things that can be harmful to your body and do everything else in moderation,” Dr Wessels explained

He added that social media can also be unhealthy if is not used wisely – spending too much time on your gadgets can have a negative impact on your health.

“Electronics can be positive with regard to access to information on healthy living and allowing us to manage daily issues with fewer challenges. However, technology can also have a negative impact on interpersonal relations, and cause eye-strain and other body overuse injuries through excessive computer use and failure to have an adequate balance in your personal life,” said Dr Wessels.
