Star Wars movies being planned for “next 10 years or more”, reveals Kathleen Kennedy – DigitalSpy.com

Star Wars may be wrapping up its third trilogy of films in the Skywalker Saga this year, but it sounds like fans still have plenty to look forward to beyond Episode IX (aka The Rise of Skywalker).

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy told The Hollywood Reporter at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago that there are several players coming together to plan out the future of the Star Wars universe for another decade.

“We are looking at the next saga,” she said. “We are not just looking at another trilogy, we’re really looking at the next 10 years or more.

“This [movie] is the culmination of the Skywalker Saga – it’s by no means the culmination of Star Wars.”

The Last Jedi‘s writer and director Rian Johnson is currently developing a trilogy of films, while Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss are also putting together their own trilogy.

“I’m sitting down now with Dan Weiss and David Benioff… and Rian Johnson,” Kennedy continued.

“We’re all sitting down to talk about, where do we go next? We’ve all had conversations about what the possibilities might be, but now we’re locking it down.”

TV adventures are also on the way, with Jon Favreau series The Mandalorian currently in production.

Meanwhile most fans’ attention is currently on the final instalment of the current Star Wars trilogy, with its title being revealed last week as The Rise of Skywalker.

The teaser trailer features Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega) and Poe (Oscar Isaac) visiting what looks to be the wrecked remains of the Death Star, with the sound of Emperor Palpatine’s evil laugh ringing out towards the end of the clip.

Director JJ Abrams has promised that the film will “bring this story to a conclusion in a way that feels satisfying, surprising, amusing, shocking, all the ways that a story should make you feel”.

He added: “Mostly, it’s an adventure story about this new generation of characters who have inherited all sorts of things from those who come before. That was, in a way, how I felt about working on this movie.”

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on Thursday, December 19 in the UK and Friday, December 20 in the US.
