The Duchess of Cambridge got the royal seal of approval for her “Back to Nature” garden at the Chelsea Flower Show yesterday, as the Queen took a tour of the plot and remarked on its orderly fashion. Upon meeting her granddaughter-in-law and her grandson, Prince William, at the Royal Horticultural Society show, she said, “You’re all looking very tidy.” Her grandson replied, “Well, I’ve smartened up.”

For the grand unveiling, both female family members opted for floral dresses as a literal nod to the event. For Kate, a first-time landscape gardener, both her go-to designers, Alexander McQueen and Erdem, would have fit the bill, but it was the latter that she plumped for. The navy-and-white “Shebah” maxi dress flecked with yellow and periwinkle graphic florals came in the ladylike silhouette that we have come to associate with Kate’s wardrobe – with a high-neck and frilled sleeves to boot. On the accessories front, it was a high-low balance of diamond posy-shaped earrings and tan espadrilles that were better suited to the makeshift walkways in the enclosure than her signature pumps would have been.

Kate Gives George, Charlotte & Louis A First Look Inside Her Chelsea Flower Show Garden

It was the second time William had been given a tour of the curated wilderness, as he had previously accompanied the Cambridge children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, who were the first to explore the den, stream and swing seat designed by their mother. This time, however, there were no branch-wielding youngsters to chase after, so William let his wife take the lead and give the Queen a run-down of the components chosen by her family and planted with the help of award-winning architects Andrée Davies and Adam White.

The waterfall, for example, was a tribute to the one beloved by the Queen in Sandringham, her Norfolk home. The carrots and beetroot, meanwhile, emulated the vegetables the monarch remembers planting as a child with her sister, Princess Margaret. It is thought to be the first time Her Majesty has ever contributed personally to the Chelsea Flower Show, although she visits every May.

Upon highlighting the tepee-style hideout, Kate referenced the input of her brood: “All the sticks are from Anmer [the Cambridges’ Norfork home] and the children collected the pine cones.” She went on to point out Princess Diana’s favourite perennials, forget-me-nots, geraniums, astrantias, ferns, strawberry plants and rhubarb, which were planted in memory of her. The site will open to the public today.
