Stash your aesthetic scruples under your seat: it’s another rock biopic from Dexter Fletcher, the man who rescued Bohemian Rhapsody after Bryan Singer was fired as director, now looking to repeat the trick with Rocketman, his take on Elton John. It’s the better film, though not necessarily more enjoyable. Such is the topsy-turvy calculus that threw so many critics for a loop on Bohemian Rhapsody.

Yes, the writing was pure roquefort, the direction as lightweight as a frisbee, but the flimsiness was the point. Deciding not to give the Madame Curie treatment to the man who wrote “Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the fandango?”, Fletcher and co instead gave us a film as bright, flimsy and bracingly silly as Queen’s Greatest Hits album, less a…
