ROAD TRIP: GAY CHORUS DEEP SOUTH
Maybe you’ve checked out some of the more than 90 movies from 17 countries shown as part of the Tampa International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival, which kicked off last week. You can also hit up the cinema celebration for its final program: Gay Chorus Deep South. The newish flick, which took home the audience award for best documentary feature from the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year, is about the weeklong tour the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus embarked on through the Deep South after the 2016 presidential election. $15. 8-10 p.m. Saturday. HIT THE STREETS: SKID ROW MARATHON
Award-winning documentary Skid Row Marathon, released in 2017, centers on a judge who organizes a running club comprised of homeless and paroled men and women on Los Angeles’ notorious Skid Row district. The Peanut Butter Falcon: A man with Down syndrome (Zack Gottsagen) runs away from his adult-care home to pursue his dream of becoming a professional wrestler and finds help from an unexpected source in this affecting, appealing piece of Americana. Shia LaBeouf and Dakota Johnson also star.
Downton Abbey: In this big-screen adaptation of the TV series, excitement runs high when the Crawley family and the Downton Abbey staff learn that the king and queen will be stopping by for a visit. Screenwriter Julian Fellowes, the creative soul of the show, has delivered a knottily plotted story as tasty (and probably as nourishing) as a Pimm’s Cup.
Ready or Not: A new bride (Samara Weaving) is welcomed to her husband’s family in terrifying fashion by her new in-laws in this comic-horror effort at class-war commentary.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark: Spooky things happen when teens tell scary stories in an old mansion with a dark history.
