This weekend, the royal family is paying their respects to those who died during conflicts, including the first and second World Wars. Today, the Duchess of Cambridge attended the moving Royal Festival of Remembrance alongside the Queen, Prince Charles, and nearly every other working royal.

The annual event features musical performances commemorating Britain’s war heroes. This year in particular, the program marked the 75th anniversary of the battles of 1944, including D-Day, and the 100th anniversary of the founding of the intelligence and security organization, the Government Communications Headquarters or GCHQ.

The program featured a number of artists including James Blunt, Leona Lewis, and Jeff Goldblum alongside the Central Band of the Royal Air Force and the Band of HM Royal Marines.

Kate arrived at the Royal Albert Hall wearing a sophisticated, appropriately sober boatneck black dress with velvet ribbon waistline. Ever the hair accessory influencer, she added a subtle touch of glam to her paired back look by getting in on the headband trend with a padded black version embroidered with glittering black beadwork.

In her timelessly classic style, Kate finished off the look with diamond and pearl drop earrings, black hosiery, black pumps, and of course, a trio of red poppy remembrance pins. While the tradition isn’t as well known in the United States, wearing poppies in November has been a tradition in Britain and some of the Commonwealth countries since 1915, and the flower has become a poignant symbol, honoring the lives and memories of fallen troops.

Tomorrow, Kate is expected join the rest of her family at London’s Cenotaph for the national memorial service.
