The Buzz: Meade Street Bistro to open in Appleton – Appleton Post Crescent
Published 10:26 AM EST Dec 2, 2019
A long-awaited Appleton restaurant is finally getting ready to serve.
Meade Street Bistro will open to the public Friday at 2729 N. Meade St., in the multi-tenant building at the corner of Northland Avenue that also houses Papa Murphy’s Pizza and the Bargain Garden Thrift Shop.
The Meade Street Bistro is a reincarnation of the now-gone Appleton Street Sports Bar & Grill, which closed in November 2018 when its building was slated for demolition along with the adjacent city parking ramp.
“We have taken an empty space and totally renovated everything. Everything is brand new, from the floors and walls to the sinks and the toilets,” said operating partner Sony Meyer. “Once you see the work that was done, you’ll say, ‘oh, I know why it took a year.’”
The relocation took more time than expected, and the restaurant’s five partners are still waiting for a final relocation compensation check from the city.
With the move, the restaurant evolved from a sports bar and grill to a casual bistro. It gave up some of its TVs, though not all. “You can have a nice dinner and still watch the Packers game,” said Meyer.
Besides burgers, pizza and fish fries, it now also has steaks and seafood. It hired culinary chefs from FVTC, replacing line cooks. Its local suppliers include The Meat Block, Simple Simon, Acoca Coffee and Frio ice cream.
The private party room in back is named the Waltman Room after the late Mark Waltman, a regular customer who died January 1. Waltman had sent in the winning submission last year in the restaurant’s contest to find a new name.
The restaurant is going through private training and testing nights early this week.
When it opens to the public Friday, regular hours will be 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Closed Sundays. Reservations are taken at all times.
