Drew Lock breaks out Buzz Lightyear celebration during big performance against Texans in first NFL road start – The Denver Post

HOUSTON — After quarterback Drew Lock donned a wristband listing the play calls during his NFL debut against the Chargers last week, teammates razzed him with the nickname “Buzz Lightyear” for the accessory’s similarity to the forearm laser beam of the Disney character.

So, on Sunday at NRG Stadium, Lock went to infinity … and beyond with a celebration that incorporated a homage to the confident, animated space ranger.

“It blew up on Twitter (last week), so the offensive line was like, ‘You should shoot the laser after we score a touchdown,’” Lock explained. “So I was like, ‘All right’… We fully embraced it.”

After each of his three touchdowns here Sunday amid a tantalizing performance during his first career NFL road start, Lock imitated Lightyear firing his laser beam. The move, originally suggested by center Connor McGovern, was a hit among his teammates and on social media as the Broncos scored on their first five possessions to cruise to a 38-24 win.

Lock, 23, was born about a year after the first Toy Story debuted in theaters in November 1995.

“I love that movie, all four of them,” Lock said. “The first one’s the best, the fourth one’s kind of sad… We’ve got to bring back some legends (like Lightyear) sometimes.”

Lock hadn’t worn a wristband play-list during his action in the preseason. But offensive coordinator Rich Scangarello said last week that Lock’s decision to wear one the past two weeks is “part of this whole process” of settling into being the team’s No. 1 quarterback and getting all the play calls correct.

So far, the Broncos’ Buzz looks like he knows what he’s doing.

“I like to look at it a lot (right before plays) to remind me of the short motions,” Lock said. “That reminds myself to bring the wideout down, and if I ever have any more questions (on the call), I just look back at it.”
