We’ve made it to Friday, which means it’s time for another non-football open thread to just chatter!
Last week we discussed favorite video games, so this week I’m going for another route of entertainment: Movies.
I am not a movie buff and have hardly watched recent films that have generated critical acclaim — I promise to make use of my Amazon Prime and watch Knives Out — but I have my share of movies that have high rewatch value even if I know every scene from start to finish.
The pic I have in here is from Midnight Run, a 1988 action comedy by Martin Brest which featured Robert DeNiro, Charles Grodin, Yaphet Kotto, and the late, great Dennis Farina. DeNiro plays the role of Jack Walsh, a former Chicago cop turned bounty hunter who’s working for Los Angeles bail bondsman Eddie Moscone (played by Joe Pantoliano). His task is to capture an accountant known as “The Duke” (played by Grodin), who embezzled a ton of money from Chicago mob boss Jimmy Serrano (played by Farina).
Walsh has to bring The Duke back to Los Angeles within five days or else the bondsman defaults on his bail. He’s not only up against FBI agent Alonzo Mosely (played by Kotto), who want The Duke to testify as a witness against Serrano, but another bounty hunter (played by John Ashton) who’s also put on the case by Moscone when Walsh doesn’t bring The Duke back in a timely manner.
I won’t spoil the rest of the movie but it is my favorite because it blends comedy, drama, and action all into one and so seamlessly. The acting is outstanding and the writing is brilliant. Here’s a taste of what you’ll get if you’ve never watched the movie. (Warning: NSFW language)

My rewatch list slants towards comedies — In The Loop, Airplane, Naked Gun — but The Taking of Pelham One Two Three is also a timeless classic and Robert Shaw really aces his role to near-perfection. Full Metal Jacket is another one I’ve lost count as to how many times I’ve replayed several scenes.
