WAYNESBORO – Area breweries receive honors from the Virginia Craft Beer Cup and Waynesboro is offering a tourism grant — here’s the buzz.

Two Augusta County breweries were honored in the Virginia Craft Beer Cup. Seven Arrows Brewing Company and Skipping Rock Beer Company received awards.
The cup winners were announced by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, held June 17 at Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond.
There were nearly 300 brewers and supporters at the event, a release said. This year 342 beers in 35 categories competed for awards and judging took place June 8 at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery in Richmond, the release said.
The competition was managed by Head Judge Certification Program Judge Anna Shore, along with 39 judges and 23 stewards.
The Virginia Craft Beer Cup is one of the largest state competition of its kind in the country, according to the release.
“Contributing to the development of outstanding independent craft beer is central to our mission,” Brett Vassey, President & CEO of the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild, in a release. “The cup is an important part of helping to expand public recognition and peer appreciation for great craft beer.”
Seven Arrows, located outside of Waynesboro, won two second place awards for its Aurora Pils in the Czech lager category and its Sour Grapes beer in the fruit beer category. Seven Arrows had been open since 2015.

Skipping Rock won third in the Trappist ale category for its Belgian Dubbel. Skipping Rock is located outside of Staunton and opened in March.
New Realm Brewing won the first place best in show award for its Euphonia Pilsner and Fine Creek Brewing Company won the second place best in show award for its Dry Hopped Brett Saison.
Other breweries along the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail, which runs from Harrisonburg to Lexington down Interstate 81 include:
- Three Notch’d Brewing Company — first place for brown British beer — No Veto Brown
- Great Valley Farm Brewery — first place for fruit beer — Peach Farmhouse Ale
- Three Notch’d Brewing Company — third place for pale American — Ghost of the 43rd
- Brother’s Craft Brewing — second place for pale malty European lager — Lil’ Hellion
- Restless Moons Brewing — first place for strong European beer — Inked

Grant
Waynesboro businesses and organizations will have the opportunity to apply for a tourism-oriented grant program called Building Opportunities to Support Tourism (BOOST).
Businesses and organizations can apply for up to $3,000 per organization to support things like fairs, festivals and projects that will help boost visitation, a release said. The grants can be used for marketing, design and printing costs for organization in those efforts.
Funds are accessible for new and existing tourism-related endeavors taking place within Waynesboro between July 1, 2019 and June 30, 2020, the release said.
“BOOST grants are one of the ways the City strives to bring more visitors into Waynesboro,” Greg Hitchin, director of Economic Development and Tourism, said in a release. “Grants supporting the great events that attract visitors to Waynesboro allow event organizers to extend their marketing reach.”
Tourism expenditures in Waynesboro for 2017 were $36,282,493, according to the release.
The grant application is available on the city’s tourism website at visitwaynesboro.net and on the city’s economic development site at waynesborobusiness.com.
Applications are due by noon on Monday, July 15 to the Waynesboro Economic Development and Tourism Office. A committee will review the applications and make determinations for grant awards by July 24.
