Gossip Girl: 5 Best Rivalries (& 5 That Made No Sense) – Screen Rant

Gossip Girl was bound to have some drama based on the title alone, and there was more than enough for viewers. It seemed that every other episode a new rivalry was born between the characters, and they fought it out by utilizing any blackmail they had to their advantage.

There were some rivalries that fans were behind, but others made no sense at all to viewers. Fans watched as these characters went from ground zero to nuclear in seconds as new gossip was revealed. Keep reading to learn about the five best rivalries in Gossip Girl and five that made no sense!

10 Best: Jenny Vs. Blair

Jenny and Blair were your typical rivals and it was one of the best rivalries in the show. Blair was the queen of the school, and Jenny wanted to be part of the popular crowd. It is fun to watch as the two battle it out to see who comes out on top.

It is the typical teenage story as Jenny finally reaches her goal of becoming the leader of the school until she finds out that it isn’t what she wants. We learned some valuable life lessons from these two, which is what any rivalry should show to its viewers.

9 No Sense: Vanessa Vs. Dan

Vanessa and Dan were friends before the first episode of the show, and yet the writers decided to break their beautiful friendship apart. It seemed a bit strange when they became an item, but fans grew to love them together as Serena went off and did her own thing.

They have had their fights, but there was no reason they should have split after Vanessa left for Haiti. We almost wonder if they were friends at all after all of the shady things they did together, that made no sense at all considering their long friendship.

8 Best: Blair Vs. Chuck

Blair and Chuck were constantly on each other’s throats throughout the series as both refuse to confess their love to one another. It was perfect the way viewers were kept guessing as to whether or not they would end up together in the end.

The entire time it was obvious that the two wanted to be together, but a commitment wasn’t in their future until the end of the series. Their rivalry was always sparked by a turn of events that ended with them slowly following back in love following some shenanigans.

7 No Sense: Dan Vs. Serena

Dan and Serena fought several times throughout the show and it was always for dumb reasons. The first fight started when Serena became jealous of Vanessa after she showed up out of the blue. She had no reason not to trust him, but chose instead to be petty about it and break it off.

They again break up because they decided they were from two different worlds when in reality, their worlds were one and the same. These petty fights continue throughout their relationship and it seemed they had no need to hate each other, and yet, they tried to find reasons for it to end between them.

6 Best: Serena Vs. Georgina

Georgina is a certified nut job, so it is a no brainer that her rivalry with Serena would be one of the best in the show. It all starts when Georgina begins to send Serena inappropriate gifts as she entices her to come back to her old lifestyle.

We are astounded when Georgina goes so far as to drug her and blackmail her with an old video. The rivalry becomes juicy when we see she has targeted Dan and plans to seduce him as the final form of her revenge against her old friend.

5 No Sense: Lily Vs. Rufus

Lily and Rufus were the perfect couple as they complemented each other perfectly, and yet, their rivalry made it so they didn’t end up together in the end. Their feelings have always been there, but when Lily doesn’t tell Rufus about their former child together, things start to take an ugly turn.

They constantly try to help the other one out as Lily offers Rufus money to pay for Dan’s college, and he stubbornly refuses. All they had to do was be honest with each other and their entire relationship would have lasted forever, but instead, we ended up with the nonsense that led to this rivalry.

4 Best: Eric Vs. Jenny

Jenny and Eric become good friends in the first season, but that all changes when she becomes the queen of the school. The rivalry with Eric starts after a yogurt is dumped on him for taking her steps. Eric retaliates by ruining Jenny’s dream date to cotillion, and the entire thing shows how their character arcs have transformed through the series.

They both fall victim to their childish ways as they revert from the upstanding individuals they were, to those engaged in a petty rivalry. It is one of the best in the show, as viewers learned not to stoop to the level of others to seek revenge.

3 No Sense: Lola Vs. Serena

Lola is Serena’s cousin, and during Serena’s effort to help Lola understand her new wealth, she creates a terrible rivalry. Serena begins to hate her cousin and tries to sabotage her as she took the spotlight away from Serena.

It hurts their relationship and we are not sure why it happened in the first place. Serena had plenty of time being number one on the Upper East Side, and instead of helping further her cousin’s career, she works against it. Serena is all about family and yet she destroys the best family relationship she could have had.

2 Best: Chuck Vs. Jenny

Jenny and Chuck’s rivalry began in the first episode when Chuck tries to force himself on her at Blair’s party. We couldn’t believe our eyes, and from then on, we had joined Team Jenny. This initial rivalry sets up their relationship for the rest of the series as they deal with living situations and love.

They both use this moment and hatred for one another to change themselves for the better. It is a rocky road, but a rivalry that was necessary to send the characters in the right direction.

1 No Sense: Blair Vs. Serena

Blair and Serena have been best friends since as long as we can remember, and yet a rivalry consistently springs up between them. The things they do to each other are unforgivable, and it leaves us wondering how they were ever friends in the first place.

The entire rivalry makes no sense because based on the stunts both of the girls pulled, they never should have forgiven one another. It was a disaster from the beginning and something we will never understand.
