‘New lifestyle’: Walmart shirt sales skyrocket amid coronavirus outbreak – Washington Examiner

Walmart has had a surge in sales for shirts but not an increase in sales for pants during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We’re seeing increased sales in tops, but not bottoms. So, people who are concerned, obviously, from the waist up,” Walmart’s EVP of corporate affairs Dan Barlett told Yahoo Finance on Thursday. “These behaviors are going to continue to change and evolve as people get accustomed to this new lifestyle, if you will. And we’re able to accommodate that, both online and in our stores.”

Barlett added that the company was having “massive volume” in both online orders as well as in-store sales in some states. “That will probably ebb and flow based on the news,” he said.

Walmart has sold a lot more cleaning supplies since the pandemic outbreak but also has seen increases in noncoronavirus related products. “I think we’ve sold over 30 million Popsicle sticks,” Barlett said.

Walmart announced last week they would be giving over $500 million in bonuses early to employees because of the coronavirus outbreak. The company also plans on hiring another 150,000 people through May to meet demand.
