The finale of “Dancing With the Stars” began with a parade in The Grove (next door to the ballroom), complete with a marching band, floats, lots of dancers, the four finalists and their pro partners, and glitter and confetti. The two-hour show was filled with guest artists, and special dance numbers with all of the pros.

Each of the finalist couples — Alexis Ren and Alan Bersten, Bobby Bones and Sharna Burgess, Evanna Lynch and Keo Motsepe, and Milo Manheim and Witney Carson — repeated a memorable dance that they had done earlier in the season. Each pair then performed a freestyle routine. Viewers — only in the Eastern and Central time zones — were encouraged to cast “Last Chance Votes” right up to the end of the show. These votes were combined with last week’s viewer votes plus Monday’s judges scores.

At the end of two hours of dancing, the four couples stood side-by-side behind the infamous Mirrorball Trophy and waited for the results. Host Tom Bergeron announced, “And the Mirrorball champion is … Bobby and Sharna!”

Stunning!

To their credit, the three remaining competitors clapped and smiled, and Sharna and Bobby gasped in surprise.

With co-host Erin Andrews next to him, Tom said to radio personality Bobby, “You are, in very true words, the people’s champion, my friend. What do you have to say?”

“Thank you to the people,” Bobby said. “Thank you to Sharna, who made all this possible.”

And with that, supporters in the audience went crazy, and all of the other competitors during the season came running onto the dance floor.

Alexis and Alan repeated their Argentine tango to praise from judges Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba. “You pulled off a pretty terrific dance,” Len told them. Score: three 9s, for 27 out of 30.

Bobby and Sharna returned to “Trio Week” to bring back their version of a “Hammer Time” cha cha. Bruno called Bobby “the untouchable man of the people.” Score: three 8s, for 24 out of 30.

After a performance by singers Dan + Shay and a review of weeks 1-4, Evanna and Keo performed a tango that earned positive remarks from Len. “I challenged you to improve posture and frame. Mission accomplished.” Score: three 10s, for a perfect 30.

The final repeat performance was a Charleston set in the subway by Milo and Witney, with Robin Thicke singing. Bruno said Milo was “more exciting and sharper than ever,” and Carrie Ann added, “He is ridiculously amazing.” Score: three 10s, for another perfect 30.

There was a plug by Tom for the live tour with the pros and celebs who will participate, followed by a review of weeks 5-8. Last week, Len said he would “go home and pickle his walnuts” if Juan Pablo Di Pace and Cheryl Burke did not make the finals. After scoring two perfect 30s, they were eliminated — and Tom referenced Len’s remark in introducing a repeat of their tango.

Each of the couples performed a freestyle dance of their creation, and the judges presented each of them with perfect scores of 30. Tonight’s final combined judges’ scores for each finalist pair was Milo and Witney — 60; Evanna and Keo — 60; Alexis and Alan — 57; and Bobby and Sharna — 54.

This has been the weirdest of the 27 seasons of “Dancing With the Stars”! And at the very end, the finale result was easily the least dance-worthy. I started watching DWTS because I enjoy dancing, especially ballroom and contemporary, and I enjoyed seeing celebrities showing their personal sides at learning something with which they were unfamiliar. As the seasons went on, the fan bases have played a larger and larger part in determining who would be eliminated each week, and who would be the overall winner.

If “Dancing With the Stars” is to continue to be something about learning how to dance, I believe there must be a way to limit the viewer votes (per phone line or email address) so the show doesn’t continue to be just a popularity contest. Are the scores each week really 50 percent from the judges and 50 percent from viewers?

At the end of the show, Erin said, “See you next year.” I’m not sure about that, but I have hope.
