Both Slate and Esquire published columns saying how great the beard looks on him.
“Cruz showed up in the Senate with a filled-out salt-and-pepper beard, giving his face a defined jawline and its first-ever hints of ruggedness and affability,” the Slate author wrote.
The Gridiron Club, the oldest journalism organization in Washington, held an event Dec. 1 that Cruz attended. Despite a tough election against Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who he beat by just 2.6 points, Cruz had fun and called his overall appearance a “breakthrough.”
“This was also a breakthrough year in which my presidential sobriquet went from ‘Lyin’ Ted’ to ‘Beautiful Ted,'” Cruz said. “I gotta say, that new pet name felt like it really hit the mark. Why else do you think I’m growing a beard?”
