Gianni Versace was the most-searched for fashion query of the year – HarpersBAZAAR.com

When it came to the most searched-for fashion queries of this year, one designer has been dominant in 2018.

Google has revealed that the late Gianni Versace, who founded his fashion empire in 1978, was the top trending fashion topic in the UK. His younger sister, Donatella, was listed in third place in the same list. Antonio D’Amico, Gianni’s partner, came in ninth place.

Interest in the renowned Italian designer peaked when FX’s The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story aired on BBC Two back in February. The series focused on Versace’s assassination on the steps of his Miami Beach mansion in 1997, but also on the criminal investigation following his death and the events leading up to the moment his killer, Andrew Cunanan, pulled the trigger.

The nine-part series, which starred Darren Criss, Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez and Ricky Martin, also gave viewers an insight into Donatella’s relationship with her brother, and her impact on the business after she stepped in as creative director following Gianni’s sudden death. It was nominated for nine awards at the 2018 Emmys, winning three.

Later in the year, Versace hit the headlines once again when the fashion house was bought by American fashion retailer Michael Kors for $2.1 billion (approx £1.6 million).

The rest of Google’s 2018 fashion queries list was a mix of models, brands and sought-after products. Model and actress Agyness Deyn was ranked in second place, following her first leading role in the BBC One crime series, Hard Sun, with H&M Moschino coming fourth. The high street retailer’s latest designer collaboration was a sell-out success when it arrived in stores in November.

Fashion photographer and Harper’s Bazaar contributer Alexi Lubomirski also made the top 10. He was thrust into the spotlight when he captured the Duke and Duchess of Sussex on both their engagement shoot and their wedding day.
