The Second Part is missing the shrewd, playful subversiveness of the original, wherein the naive Emmet comes to see troubling flaws in conformist Bricksburg, and perhaps an agenda behind the corporate interests that provide “awesome stuff like dairy food, TV shows, news, coffee, surveillance cameras, all history books, our voting machines… wait a minute.” These ironies were embodied hilariously in the facetious anthem “Everything Is Awesome.”
