'Captain Marvel' First Reactions – What Critics Think of the Movie – menshealth.com

Critics have gotten their first look at Brie Larson’s turn as Captain Marvel—and what they’re saying about the latest MCU flick is getting us even more excited than we already were for it.

The 90s-set film from directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck is expected to follow Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, as she seeks to navigate an intergalactic war between two alien worlds. A trailer released last year promised a wild ride, with Larson’s Air Force pilot-turned-superhero throwing down with a super strong old lady on a bus, fighting in outer space, and gabbing with Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Larson transformed herself for the role, undergoing an intense training regimen in an effort to both look and feel the part of the strongest hero in the Marvel universe.

“A huge part of [Captain Marvel] is her strength,” Larson said in an interview last year. “I knew if I could go through that experience, I would get closer to her and I’d understand [her].”

So what are critics’ first reactions to Captain Marvel?

“[Captain Marvel] has a great ‘90s sci-fi vibe w/ a tone unlike any other Marvel movie, really,” Fandango’s Erik Davis tweeted late Tuesday. “It’s retro & trippy, mysterious & dorky. It’s funny in surprising places & badass in all the right places. It remains entertaining because it’s always changing.”

“It’s got the right stuff,” Davis added.

Here’s what others had to say:

The latest Marvel entry has been highly anticipated, despite the efforts of sexist trolls to dump on it online, since the first trailer for the flick dropped in December.
