The contestants sang Disney hits, and two were eliminated.
The top 10 contestants of American Idol’s second season on ABC sang in live performances on Sunday night’s episode, and voting was open for the duration of the show. By the end of the two-hour telecast, two artists were eliminated, resulting in the season’s top eight finalists. Judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan are able to save one artist through the rest of the competition. Sunday night’s contestants all sang Disney songs, and Rebel Wilson was on hand to dish out advice.
Uche went first, singing “Eye to Eye” from A Goofy Movie. He gave one of his typically entertaining and layered performances, showcasing artistry with his lesser-known Disney selection. Uche was one of the judges’ wildcard saves last week, so he pulled out all the stops here, playing to his strengths and showing America what kind of vocalist he really wants to be. Bryan pointed out his ability to make any song uniquely him.
Laci Kaye Booth followed with a performance of “I See the Light” from Tangled, which was the perfect song choice for her. It went well with her sweet, breathy tone, and her runs and ad libs were solid. The judges commended her on making it her own. Richie said the song choice was perfect.
Alejandro Aranda followed with “Remember Me” from Coco. It was an emotional, well-crafted performance. His arrangement was creative, and he also made the song his own. Bryan noted that he’s stepping more and more out of his comfort zone.
Alyssa Raghu, also one of last week’s wildcard picks, sang “Colors of the Wind” from Pocahontas, sticking to her formula of singing big, dramatic ballads. Her voice was strong. Bryan called the performance “beautiful.”
Glee alum Lea Michele dropped by to sing “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. She was followed by Wade Cota singing Toy Story’s “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” His unique tone sounded strong in the arrangement, and Richie called him a star.
Dimitrius Graham next sang “You’ll Be in My Heart” from Tarzan. It wasn’t a pitch-perfect performance, but it was another ambitious one from Graham, who manages to surprise week after week. “You took us all on a ride,” Bryan said.
Walker Burroughs sang “When Somebody Loved Me” from Toy Story 2, accompanying himself on the piano. It was an understated, lovely performance with strong emotional dynamics. Perry said he transported her.
Next up, Madison VanDenberg sang “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana, a song choice that really allowed her to show off powerful, complex vocals. She belted it out, showcasing impressive range. As Richie put it, she hit a “stratosphere of notes.”
Singing “Oo-De-Lally” from Robin Hood, Laine Hardy leaned into a more country sound in his voice and gave an entertaining, standout performance. Richie thought it was perfectly within his wheelhouse.
Closing out the performances, Jeremiah Lloyd Harmon sang “Candle on the Water” from Pete’s Dragon. He also showcased impressive range, delivering on the vocal and emotional fronts in his dynamic performance.
With the voting window closed, it was time for results. Uche and Graham were eliminated from the competition, and the judges surprisingly did not choose to use their one save.
On Monday night, American Idol will air a clip show recapping the season. The performances resume next Sunday.
