Higgs: Cannabis Lifestyle Brand With Elegance – Forbes

A couple weeks ago I received two small packages of pre-rolls that were unlike anything that I have seen or better yet, smoked prior. The packages were extremely well designed with sleek artwork and utterly mesmerizing color schemes. My childhood spent partially in Miami Beach at my family’s estate (Shangri-La) on Hibiscus Island, was filled with this cheery color array. The boxes scream to me Classical Art Deco, and the Higgs Lifestyle Cannabis experience comes with a twist. That twist would be the perfectly hand stuffed and tiny cannabis cigarettes contained within!

This package is Miami Vice! Sleek and profoundly attractive with eye-catching colors, opening the package is just as pleasurable as smoking the contents. There is a reassuring click, and certain closure when you open and close the lid. This is unlike any cigarette box I’d ever seen, not that I smoke cigarettes. Never! This lock-tight enclosure is in a class all by itself. Sure there are many pre-roll companies on the market. I’ve written about a few of them because they appeal to my personal, Frank Lloyd Wright influenced design sensibilities. I’m all about light and textures along with character. Higgs’ packaging speaks to me in a deeply rooted design vernacular. I really like what they have achieved. It feels good in the hand and is really a conversation starter. Then to learn that Higgs is from Venice, California, well that sealed the deal. Back when I was a lad, I lived for a time on the Venice/Marina Del Rey boarder. ON the beach. Ironside Street if my memory serves me. I have fond memories of riding my bicycle to work, it was the summer and I worked at my uncle’s factory. He was in the patent pharmaceutical business and their factory was on Rose Avenue in Venice. It was the 1970’s (yes, I’m that old) and Venice was a pretty rough place at night. I made my way through town quickly if I had to stay late. I’m sure it’s not like that any longer. Perhaps if I had the joy of smoking a Higgs pre-roll, I wouldn’t have worried about riding my bicycle through Venice at night? Who knows. But these little pre-rolls certainly do the trick.They are a wonderfully bemusing experience.

Opening the lid reveals another color, in this case the interior is florescent pink. Classic Art Deco all the way. The weight of each carefully rolled cannabis joint with the tip and the contents rolls in at just over a gram. I’d imagine that the weight of the fill would be about a half to three quarters of a gram per pre-roll. The tip is not your typical RAW Brand (brand) tip, nor is the outer casing made from a cheap paper. This one does not burn the throat. It is far more elegant, the end that goes against your lips, reading Higgs in a florescent pink color, set against the black tip, then rolled into a paper that is not too thick, nor too thin. It’s just right. The business end, you know the part that is burned is not twisted, but it comes tamped down. Class Act! I love this crisp attention to detail. A cone filling machine can only do so much, so fast. These little pre-rolls have all the feel of a hand rolled cannabis joint, without the stress and bother of sourcing the raw ingredients yourself. Well done! And the grind that they use is not too tight. The micro- joint burns cleanly, no canoeing, hardly any smoke with the memorable size making the experience forthright and non-confrontational. You hardly notice the tiny thing and then the only thing you’d find intriguing is the scent. I love the spicy-warm scent of a burning Higgs.

Elegance and Style!

Yes, Higgs is a lifestyle brand. They’ve done the heavy lifting for you. Right now, while I’m writing this piece, I’m enjoying a mini- pre-rolled spliff from the Black Box, trimmed in hot pink and turquoise blue accents. This cannabis style itself is peaceful and calming. The cultivar is probably an Indica dominant, but not too much as to put you down for the day. Focusing and deeply relaxing. I don’t feel like sleeping, nor do I feel any apparent stress with four other articles to write over the next week. The pressure behind my eyes (Glaucoma) just melted away without an aspirin. This is a richly symbiotic event, the chill enjoyment of a Higgs Black Box pre-roll, and each thoughtful draw teaches the secrets of the universe. Well, not really, but I digress. This mini-joint is just the thing to take the edge off.

The White Box (with fluorescent pink and green accents) is a heady melange of brightly colored cannabis strains. This is the wake-and-bake of the pre-rolled cannabis family. Whatever cultivars of California Sun-Grown cannabis that they use, it’s pretty clear that clear-headed and awake are the first two attributes that you’ll notice. Immediately after enjoying the Black Box, the White Box will charm you with clarity and that get the job done now, sense of immediacy.

Sun grown cannabis is my preference. I’ve tasted many righteous growers lately. Everyone says theirs is the best, and I believe them. Everyone has their own secrets. I see cannabis very much in the same realm as fine wine. There is terroir that needs to be discovered and spoken about with all the conviction and fortitude that wine is afforded. Cannabis, especially outdoor-grown cannabis is the stuff I want to allied myself with. There are lessons to be taught and experiences to enjoy with the flavor of the earth as the framework for the experience of cannabis.

Tasting notes:

Black Box: Toasted tree nuts like pecans and walnuts dry the palate slightly before offering a profusion of dark stone fruits and toasty oak. There are the minerals that wash over your palate next, followed quickly by the aroma of freshly cut French Herbs, rosemary, lavender buds, thyme. They move across the teeth and tongue. The buzz is peaceful and succinct, relaxing without being destroyed. This is the perfect size to enjoy the day while doing what you need to do to get the job done. It’s strongly scented, so choose your sesh carefully if discretion is the key.

White Box: Refreshing aromatics of caramelized citrus fruits, orange oil, Asian spices spill out, coating the teeth and tongue in a richly textured wash of saline and fruit salad. California Cannabis possesses a brightly lit flavor that just says fruit salad. There is richness and character in each pull. Wonderful stuff. Perfect for the early morning, or just before going out on the town. Conversation is fun and you’ll definitely not have a hang-over in the morning. A massive win-win!
