Meghan Markle Is Officially a Princess, According to Baby Archie’s Birth Certificate – The Cheat Sheet
Although her official royal title is Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Sussex, the United Kingdom considers Meghan Markle a princess. Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son, Archie’s arrival, documents reveal that the Duchess of Sussex is, in fact, a Princess of the United Kingdom. We share the details, below.
Is Meghan Markle a princess?
Some fans claim she is a People’s Princess like her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. However, the royal family has never referred to Meghan Markle as an actual princess — until now.
Albeit not her official royal title, “princess” is Meghan Markle’s official occupation in the United Kingdom. And, her son’s birth certificate proves just that. Under the section titled “mother,” Meghan Markle’s name is listed as Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex. And, right below it, her occupation reads as “Princess of the United Kingdom.”
Meghan Markle isn’t the only non-princess to list ‘Princess of the United Kingdom’ as her occupation
The Duchess of Sussex isn’t the first duchess to list her occupation as princess. In addition to Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton is also officially a Princess of the United Kingdom, according to her children’s birth certificates. That said, unlike the Duchess of Sussex, Kate Middleton will likely go by “princess” one day.
When Prince Charles ascends the throne, he will make his heir apparent, Prince William the Prince of Wales. That automatically means that Kate Middleton is destined for Princess of Wales. There is much debate over whether or not Kate Middleton will actually use the title — Camilla Parker Bowles is the current Princess of Wales but doesn’t go by it out of respect for Princess Diana — as it’s closely connected with the late Princess Diana. However, some strongly argue that she is the perfect person to hold the title and it could be one of the many ways she and Prince William honor their mother and mother-in-law.
Why is Meghan Markle’s first name written as Rachel on her son’s birth certificate?
If the name “Rachel” confused you, you’re not alone. In fact, according to the Duchess of Sussex, people have been confused by her name nearly all her life. “I’ve never been called it, but my parents named me Rachel Meghan Markle and it’s just confused every legal document for my entire life,” she told a reporter back in 2013.
It’s unclear why Meghan Markle hasn’t officially changed her first name to Meghan. However, she has officially dropped “Markle” as her last name (though the press and public still — and probably always will — call her that). In the royal family, those with His or Her Royal Highness status are not required to provide a last name, which is why you will probably never see the royal family’s last name, Mountbatten-Windsor tacked onto hers in a legal document. Instead, Meghan Markle will continue to use “Rachel Meghan Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex” as her name on legal documents — unless of course, she decides to part ways with Rachel.
