The Academy Backtracks on Oscar Telecast Date Because That’s Just Who It Is Now – Vulture

Oscar viewers learned last year that if the Academy tells you something about the telecast is true, look at that information with a skeptical eye. Next year’s ceremony was slated for February 9, which is weeks earlier than the traditional end-of-the-month placement. Today, though, the Academy released dates for the 2021 and 2022 ceremonies, and they have been moved back to February 28 and 27, respectively. According to the update from the AMPAS, “timing of the 2022 Olympics, the Super Bowl, and national holidays will keep the 2021 and 2022 dates on the last Sunday in February. The Academy and ABC continue to evaluate dates for future years.” If that continued evaluation process looks anything like how the Original Song performances and technical awards were evaluated for inclusion in the 2019 Oscar ceremony, expect the broadcast to stay exactly where it is now after being switched around two or three times before ultimately being recanted.
