“American Royals” Is “Gossip Girl” Meets “The Crown” in New Book Trailer – TeenVogue.com

Imagine a world where Meghan Markle is the queen of the United States of America. Though that delightful fantasy will likely remain, well, a fantasy, New York Times bestselling author Katharine McGee’s newest novel American Royals is the next closest thing.

The forthcoming novel from Penguin Random House is set in present-day America — if at the end of the Revolutionary War, George Washington accepted a crown instead of a temporary presidency. Fast forward a couple of centuries, and Washington’s descendants (known as the House of Washington) rule benevolently over the country. And where there are a king and queen, there are royal princesses preparing for their eventual ascent to the throne.

American Royals centers around the lives of sisters Princess Beatrice and Princess Samantha and their friends and family. America has just overturned a male-heir tradition, and eldest child Beatrice is being groomed to carry on the crown (while dealing with new feelings about her future reign). Samantha, meanwhile, busies herself with rule-breaking alongside her twin brother, the handsome and fought-over Prince Jefferson, to avoid her insecurities at being the “spare” daughter. Throw in some forbidden love, incessant paparazzi, and social-climbing duchesses and you’ve got a novel that’s Gossip Girl, but make it royal.

As the book’s summary reads, American Royals offers “an alternate version of the modern world, one where the glittering age of monarchies has not yet faded—and where love is still powerful enough to change the course of history.”

American Royals is on sale Sept. 3, 2019, but if you can’t wait until then, Teen Vogue has the exclusive book trailer for your viewing pleasure:
