Nice Time was a bar/lounge that opened in April at 125 E. College Ave. in downtown Appleton.

It closed abruptly at the end of October, surprising both its operator and those who were fans of its eclectic vintage vibe.

“We’ve been in a number of times and really enjoyed it. We went for the décor and atmosphere,” said Dan Grimmer, a customer from Hortonville. “We will want to know where they end up.”

Nice Time and landlord Soma Corp. had mutually agreed on a month-to-month lease, and the lounge was given a 30-day notice.

“They decided to go a different direction,” said Josh Nave, owner of both Nice Time and its predecessor in the space, the Cena restaurant. “They informed us we were no longer eligible for renewal. They didn’t share their plans going forward.”

“Tenants have rights and responsibilities and the tenant wasn’t living up to his side of the deal. The landlord decided it was best to move on with another tenant,” said Dave Allen, representative for Soma Corp.

Nave said there were communication problems. “It was nothing to do with anything on our part. Nice Time was really beginning to catch on. It was a disappointment that we weren’t given more time.”

He said there is a possibility that Nice Time could relocate in the future.

“It’s a bummer. I wasn’t involved in any of the conversations,” said operator Christopher Fenn. “I appreciate the customers who did support us. I’m sorry it didn’t last longer but it was out of our hands.”
