Reader question: Any new updates on when REI will open?

Answer: The coming REI Co-op is currently estimated to open in May. It’s on the far north end of the WG&R-led development at the northeast corner of W. Wisconsin Avenue and Interstate 41.

The store will sell outdoor equipment and apparel to both co-op members and non-members. It will also have equipment rentals and outdoor programs.

Reader question: I heard that Texas Roadhouse wants to build a new restaurant with more space. Is that true?

Answer: Texas Roadhouse is considering an expansion, but if it goes ahead with it, it will be in its existing spot, said spokesman Travis Doster.

“We are not looking to relocate the restaurant. It’s been there for 15 years and it has done well,” he said. “We are looking at some expansion. We call it a ‘bump out’ where we can add more tables and give the guests a little more elbow room. We’re in the talking stage. We don’t have a timeline.”

Reader question: Do you have any idea if Gabriel Lofts will be having a tour or open house when they are done with construction on their building? I know a lot of us old-time Appletonians would love a chance to see what they have done with a building we remember fondly from our past.

Answer: Gabriel Lofts is the apartment complex taking shape in the former Gabriel Furniture’s 131-year-old building and adjacent new construction in the 200 block of E. College Avenue in downtown Appleton.

Jack Klister, one of the partners in Fore Development, said they’re considering doing some kind of event, but the date and format have not yet been determined.

The opening is roughly three months away. “We are still aiming for an early April opening” he said.

Reader question: When will Panera build on the east side? I’ve heard from the managers on the east side that it’s a definite that they are going to build on the east side but when?

Answer: Panera Bread just recently inked the lease for its second Fox Cities restaurant on Appleton’s east side/Darboy. Its steel structure is already in place on County KK east of Chipotle. The company hasn’t given an opening date estimate.

Reader question: In the last two days, the old Burger King in Neenah has had a lot of WE Energies trucks there and the for sale sign seems to be missing. Has our Burger King been bought?

Answer: Yes. Keesler Orthodontics purchased the former Burger King property at 977 S. Green Bay Road in Neenah, and is demolishing the existing restaurant building. It will build a new clinic at the site, likely finishing in 2021, according to city records.
