WAYNESBORO – Two Waynesboro restaurants have closed and this Waynesboro shop is offering kayak rentals for safe, social distancing activities — here’s the buzz.
Tailgate Grill
Tailgate Grill announced it would close on a now deleted Facebook page last week. According to a sign posted on the restaurant’s door, the restaurant said they would be closed indefinitely.
“The Tailgate Grill has made the difficult decision to remain closed indefinitely,” the sign said. “As you well know, the COVID-19 virus has put an incredible economic strain on all businesses. The Tailgate is no exception.
“The safety of our customers and our staff has always been a top priority,” the sign said. “We want to thank all our customers for their support through this very difficult time.”

Ruby Tuesday
The Ruby Tuesday in Waynesboro has also announced it has closed. A sign on the door read:
“This Ruby Tuesday location is closed. We are sorry for any inconvenience that this may have caused you.”
The sign asks those with questions to visit RubyTuesday.com. Ruby Tuesday restaurants across the country have been closing steadily for a number of years.
According to a USA TODAY article, the casual dining restaurant chain Ruby Tuesday has been facing financial woes before the COVID-19 pandemic , which forced the chain, among other chain restaurants, to temporarily close.
“The company’s nationwide presence has been declining for years – from 945 U.S. locations in 2007 to less than 500 today,” the article said. “As the nationwide lockdown continues, already a number of closed Ruby Tuesday locations have announced that they will not be reopening.”
Water activities
Need to get outside? Waynesboro’s Rockfish Gap Outfitters is offering kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards rentals.
The city’s kayak program has been suspended for the 2020 season, according to its website.
The rentals can be utilized on the Waynesboro Water Trail, or any nearby body of water, according to a release from the city.
According to the Rockfish Gap Outfitters website:
- $35.00 for any single person kayak or Stand Up Paddle Board. This includes your paddle and PFD (personal floatation device)
- $60.00 for any two person kayak or canoe. 2 paddles and 2 PFDs included.
The store also said if you decide to buy a kayak from us, within 30 days of the rental, we will knock off one rental fee for one boat from the price of your kayak. For more information call 540-943-1461 or visit rockfishgapoutfitters.com.
The Waynesboro Water Trail, which is open to sunrise to sunset, is part of the city’s park system. There are boat ramps at Ridgeview and Basic City parks for access to the South River.
“Put-in your canoe or kayak at Ridgeview Park and paddle the scenic 4 mile stretch of the South River to the convenient take-out at Basic Park,” the city website said. “Shorter trips can be taken by if desired by utilizing other river accesses along the water trail. This stretch of the river is perfect for beginners or those looking for an easy paddle. Paddlers can expect to encounter class I and class II rapids along the way and enjoy a different perspective of this river city.”
